Fun Holiday Traditions: Elf on the Shelf

(Image from Elf on the Shelf)

I recently learned about Elf on the Shelf, with a preschooler in the house, Christmas has become “an event!”  And what a better way to make it an event than to add a little holiday magic.  Elf on the Shelf is a  “magical” elf that appears (or is unpacked) with all of the Christmas goodies. He comes with a book that explains his story: This magical elf uses his magical powers to fly back and forth to the North Pole each night while your child sleeps to tell Santa all about your families “behavior”–– to make your children are “being GOOD!”

The real fun for your children is finding your “Elf” in the morning and discovering where he had returned to in the house after his night at the North Pole.

This is a fun holiday tradition that can be started and continued for years to come!  We have just started with our little elf, and so far my preschooler is enjoying finding him each morning!  Get your Elf on the Shelf  today!

Thanksgiving Craft: Make an Apple Turkey

I love education.com for great craft ideas, especially around the holidays.   I saw this idea for apple turkeys the other day on their website, and thought it was very cute. A great festive fun food! My preschooler would enjoy threading the toothpicks with marshmallows and raisins.  It is a great activity to get your little one involved in the holiday festivities.

Make an Apple Turkey!

What You Need:

  • A large red apple
  • Large and mini sized marshmallows (one large, at least 20 small)
  • Toothpicks (seven per apple should be enough, but have extras on hand in case they break!)
  • Raisins (15 – 30)
  • Candy corn (one)

What You Do:

  1. Place the apple on a flat surface and remove the stem as close to the apple as possible.
  2. Carefully poke a toothpick into the apple on the outer rim behind where the stem was.
  3. Keep placing the toothpicks in this fashion until you have six of them fanning out behind the stem to represent the tail feathers (three clustered on one side and three on the other.)
  4. Once the toothpicks are in place, slide a raisin onto the first one, then a mini marshmallow, then another raisin, in a pattern. Talk to the kids about patterns and see if they want to create a different one (raisin, raisin, marshmallow, etc.) Repeat it on all six toothpicks. Be sure the pattern ends with the mini marshmallow at the top so the tip of the toothpick is no longer exposed.
  5. Now, on to the face of the turkey! Place another toothpick in front of the six toothpicks on the opposite side of the stem. Gently press the large marshmallow onto the toothpick.
  6. Using scissors, snip tiny slits into the spots where the eyes will go. Press a raisin into each eye hole. (Parents may want to help the kids with the scissors, since you’ll want to make a very small slit.)
  7. Using the pointy end of the candy corn, poke it into where the nose goes and you’ve got your turkey!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Let Shutterfly Help You Spread Your Holiday Cheer With Holiday Cards!

I really enjoy the Holiday Season, there is something magical about this time of year! This season ends the year, and it is all about sharing holiday traditions, and visiting with family and friends!

Since we are living in an email savvy era, it is nice to receive “snail mail” filled with family and friends Holiday Cheer!  It is fun to see the cards with the smiling faces, and hearing about all the family happenings.

I know I have mentioned how much I LOVE Shutterfly for printing my photos, my holiday cards, thank you cards, and photobooks HERE and HERE.  There is no question that I will be choosing Shutterfly for my cards this year.  They have excellent customer service, great designs, and the cards are always top quality.

You really cannot go wrong with Shutterfly for your holiday cards, with so many designs to choose from, trust me the hardest part will be picking which card to use.  They have options from 1 to several pictures on a card, and of course flat cards, folded cards, and cards of different sizes.  Another great feature is that they have a compare feature, so you can compare multiple cards at once and decide which one is correct for you!

Blossoming Joy

Here is a fun one that lets you personalize, and say a little something about the families year, what fun!

The Holly Year Christmas Card!

Peace 2011

Another fun card, that lets you add all sorts of fun family moments!

And once you have picked out that great holiday card, you can always add address labels to match!

Happy Holidays!  Now I have to decide which card I will be using for our family this year!

Thanksgiving Recipe: Turkey Rice Krispie Treat Pops

I came across this adorable recipe on the Rice Krispie website, while looking for fun things to make for Thanksgiving.  My preschooler loves to help in the kitchen, and if it is sweet that is even better! I happen to have left over Halloween candy corns so we will give this a try.

(Image from the website)
Dip into melted chocolate, add a few candy corn “feathers,” and pop these tasty turkeys on top of lollipop sticks for a cute and creative Thanksgiving dessert.
Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons   butter or margarine
  • 1 package (10 oz., about 40)   regular marshmallows
  • - OR -
  • 4 cups   miniature marshmallows
  • 6 cups   Kellogg’s® Rice Krispies® cereal
  • 1 package (12 oz., 2 cups)   semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • 1 tablespoon   vegetable oil
  • 1 1/3 cups   candy corn
  • 48   small white candies
  • 24   lollipop sticks or wooden ice cream sticks.
DIRECTIONS:
1. In large saucepan melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.2. Add KELLOGG’S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.3. Using 1/4-cup measuring cup coated with cooking spray divide warm cereal mixture into 24 portions. Using buttered hands shape each portion into ball. Cool.4. In microwave-safe bowl combine chocolate morsels and oil. Microwave on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes or until smooth, stirring every 30 seconds. Dip each ball into chocolate, allowing excess to drip off. Decorate with candy corn for tail feathers and beak. Add candies for eyes. Let stand until firm. Insert lollipop stick into each. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS: In microwave-safe bowl heat butter and marshmallows on HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 through 4 above. Microwave cooking times may vary.
