How to Take a Great Back To School Photo, “Focus on Photographing People” Book Review and Giveaway

School is about to be back in session for another year. School signals turning another page to the chapters of your child’s life. Your children have been excited to head back to school, and you have shopped for the supplies and the clothes to make their first day back perfect!
And as most moms know, we LOVE to capture these back to school moments with a photo or two. So, I was excited to have the opportunity to review the book, “Focus on Photographing People,” by Haje Jan Kamps.
From Haje Jan Kamps, “It probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone that I have a longstanding love of photography. The only thing I like more than taking photos myself is encouraging others to develop as photographers and watching their photography come alive. As such, I spend a lot of time writing about photography; I blog over on Pixiq, and I’ve written and edited dozens of books.
Taking photos of people is one of the most fun things you can do with a camera. You capture personality, emotion, and life in all its glory. You’re quite likely to run into me roaming the streets of London with my camera, hunting for another slice of life, captured through the art of street photography.
People are one of my favorite subjects for photography, whether I’ve captured their essence in a studio or out in the streets. In this book, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned about photographing people, step by step. It doesn’t matter if you’re not that self-confident as a photographer; I’ll take you right through from the basics to the nitty-gritty of getting portraits that dazzle, amaze, and inspire.”
Some tricks to capture the perfect back to school photo:
1. Get in closer – The closer you get, the more emotion you can feel pouring from the photo.
2. Focus on the eyes – The first thing your audience will look at is the eyes of the subject. Be sure to get them in focus – perfect focus – and you’ve won half the battle.
3. Watch your background – When taking photos of people, your subjects are most important, so ensure that the background doesn’t detract from your photo. You can do this by moving your subjects (putting them in front of a clean wall instead of a messy bookshelf) or moving yourself (changing your perspective).
4. Interact – Engaging with your kids and making them laugh will create memorable photos. Sometimes the best photos are the most candid.
5. Think of the environment – Obviously, you want to focus on the kids, but if you can include the school bus or classroom in the background, this will help tell the story for years to come.
REVIEW: This book was great, it goes over the fundamentals of digital photography, and it is clear, simplistic and easy to follow. I really liked the key points in each chapter, that helped you zone in on photographing people better. My favorite tip was to “focus on the eyes.” This book is perfect for the beginner photographer to the more experienced looking to refine their skills or learn more about photographing people.

I was so excited when I saw the tee shirts offered by The Chalkboard Tee from Class Attire. It is hard to find FUN and cool clothing for toddler boys! And this t-shirt was a hit! I picked out the grass skyline t-shirt, and it came with a neat little box of chalk. Mr. Toddler was so excited to get to color on his shirt. Children’s Storybook Applications Giveaway for the iPhone/iPad by Ruckus Media

I know I have talked about how much I love my iPhone and iPad applications for Mr. Toddler. I really find the educational applications are a great teaching tool for Mr. Toddler, and best of all he just loves to play on my phone or iPad. It is great when we are driving, or in a restaurant to keep his attention, and allow him to read stories. I was given the opportunity to sample John Henry, Pecos Bill, and Tom Thumb. My son adored the animated applications. The graphics are amazing, and the actors do a wonderful job of telling the stories. And what is great is that with each application you have the option to watch the video narrated by actors, read the story yourself, or even read and record the story. We downloaded these applications on our iPad, and Mr. Toddler loves the videos on these applications, as told by the actors and performers. The animation is great, and really clear. His favorite has been John Henry, and he tends to play it over and over again. I enjoy reading the stories to him, but I think that pales in comparison to the fun of the digital version with the actors. I highly recommend these applications for your iPhone or iPad! These would make great Christmas gifts for the little ones in your life.

My Review: One thing I remember about growing up is that every night we all sat down to dinner TOGETHER! It was part of our daily routine, and I looked forward to sharing my day with my parents. Now that I am a mother myself, I would like to continue this tradition of togetherness for one meal a day. There are several recipes throughout the book, but what I enjoyed reading about was how to make dinner time an enjoyable family experience. My family is still young, I have a two and 1/2 year old and a baby coming very soon. But I want to start this tradition while they are young, and have it continue. I want my children to enjoy dinner time, and I want them to be eager to share their day with us.
Here are a few ideas I noticed to make dinner more interesting. There are several in the book, but I chose ones that would make my toddler smile!
- Cover table with butcher paper. Scatter crayons around the table. Artistic eating
- Set up wood train set around place settings. Include trains for kids to move around.
As for the recipes: There are several wonderful healthy recipes in this book, and quite a variety to choose from. Some of the ones I would like to try:
- Chipotle Orange Shrimp
- Soy Good Maple Glazed Salmon
- Savory Sausage and White Bean Stew
- Chicken Piccatta
- Apple Cider Chicken
This book is wonderful, it provides ample recipes, as well as great ideas to bring dinner back to the dinner table!

My Review:
I have to say that I am a terrible coupon shopper, and a busy mommy. Afterall, what mommy isn’t BUSY! I wish I was better and more organized at looking for the coupons to save a little more every time I shop. Well, Just For U program might be my answer, I can now save more easily. In the past, I would never take the time to cut out coupons. And if I did come across a coupon, I always seem to forget to bring them to the store. But I am an internet junkie, and so if all I have to do is add the coupon to my account–I AM A DEFINITE FAN! What an advantage: No coupons for me to remember to bring with me to the store, and when I just run in to buy a few groceries, I don’t have to feel bad that I forgot the coupon, since the savings are already there for me on my Fresh Values Card!
In summary, what do I find fabulous about the Just For U program:
- You can add coupons to your card directly from the website, saving time since you are not looking through adds to cut out coupons!
- You don’t have to bring coupons with you to the store! (My personal favorite!)
- Saves money on those items you buy everyday!

My Review:
My husband and I just used the Country Bob’s All Purpose sauce as part of a pork marinade in the crock pot. The flavor was wonderful! Even reheated on the 2nd and 3rd day! It also makes a great dipping sauce. You really cannot go wrong with this sauce, and it can be used on so many different products.
